BKS Iyengar says this about Sarvangasana (Shoulderstand) in Light on Yoga

“The importance of Sarvangasana cannot be over-emphasized. It is one of the greatest boons conferred on humanity by our ancient sages. Sarvangasana is the Mother of the asanas. As a mother strives for harmony and happiness in the home, so this asana strives for harmony and happiness of the human system.

It is no overstatement to say that if a person regularly practices Sarvangasana he will feel new vigor and strength, and will be happy and confident. New life will flow into him, and his mind will be at peace and he will feel the joy of life.”

For a yoga student learning the pose, it takes practice and time to understand what B.K.S. Iyengar wrote above. It also takes practice and time to build up the pose so it can be held with steadiness and ease. Anything that we can learn that helps us in our practice of Sarvangasana can’t help but bring us closer to experiencing what BKS Iyengar wrote above: the mind at peace and feeling the joy of life.

In this workshop we will look at the many different kinds of asanas that prepare us for Sarvangasana and its variations and we will explore different ways of using props to help achieve steadiness in the pose.
