Bearing weight on our bones while maintaining alignment is the best medicine to slow the progression of osteoporosis. The standing poses in Iyengar yoga are ideal for this because they involve both of these qualities. The muscles are used to support the bones and create space in the joints, so that we build strength with flexibility. As a result they help us stand and sit well which has tremendous effect on our sense of well-being.
It is never too late to start!
Part I is for everyone, no yoga experience required. We will work on basic actions to improve our standing and balance. “Every day poses” that can be practiced anytime throughout the day will be introduced to help us build healthy bones. This way we will find it possible to “practice” without it seeming a chore.
Part II is for students familiar with Iyengar yoga and anyone who attended Part I. We will continue with the standing poses as well as practice poses for the upper body, arms and shoulders. Students will be asked to bring small weights to the class if possible.
