The beginning of B.K.S. Iyengar's definition of pranayama seems easy to understand. "Pranayama is a conscious prolongation of inhalation, retention and exhalation." This could describe many breathing practices. However, the rest of the paragraph quickly takes us into what might be uncharted yogic territory.Inhalation is the act of receiving the primeval energy in the form of breath, and retention is when the breath is held in order to savour that energy. In exhalation all thoughts and emotions are emptied with breath: then, while the lungs are empty, one surrenders the individual energy, 'I', to the primeval energy, the Atma. How might we introduce ourselves to pranayama practice in ways that are yogic, beneficial, and harmonious, both in our own bodies and minds, and according to the teachings of our lineage? This two-hour, experiential workshop will focus on preparatory and primary material from both the student's and the teacher's point of view. Please wear non-restrictive, comfortable clothing suitable for supported Savasana and sitting. Come with an empty stomach; substantial drinks are OK 60-75 minutes before class.
